Turkey & Names

December's the happening month. No? In that month alone, two countdowns take place, school holidays are on, there's christmas, thanksgiving and new year's eve. Oh not to forget, my birthday too :D That makes me a happening person eh? B-)

Anyways, this must also be the month turkeys fear most.

Talk about fashion. How about dining fashion? Tis' the season to eat turkey ~
Today, people eat turkey on Christmas and Thanksgiving worldwide. And the reason goes way back when turkey was said to be "worthless" so to say than chicken(rooster's meat is hard and hens are needed for eggs) and geese(geese are just harder to raise), so turkey was served instead during holidays since it's cheaper. Now it's the other way round. Turkeys cost a bomb whilst chicken and geese are much cheaper. What seems to be the common dish last time seems like a "Star of the Feast" now and something people would actually look forward to during meal. Personally, I think chicken and geese taste better. My aunt bought a turkey from San Francisco for my family and we had turkey for dinner. I must say...

The leftover chicken rice tastes much better than

The turkey

The turkey meat was so gristly that it made chewing the most arduous effort. At one point, my mum's teeth cant even penetrate the meat but only managed to leave marks of the bites she attempted. Ok, not all turkey meat is as atrocious, but still, turkey meat is naturally dry. My family were then making assumptions: "maybe it's past the season d", "must be they put it in the freezer and bake again for us", "the turkey is old!".

Since everyone's eating turkey, so, out of curiosity, I found out that...
TURKEY IS NOT FROM TURKEY!
It's actually an American bird.
Why then is the American bird named after a Eurasian country?
It is said that the Spanish first found the bird in the America's more than 400 years ago and they brought it back to Europe via Turkey. The English mistakenly thought it was a bird they called a "turkey" so they gave it that name thereafter.

"What?! Like that also can?"

Talk about mistaken names, my family, or rather, my mother's side of the family have different surnames. My mum's surname is Than, her siblings have surnames like Dan, Tan, Seng etc. My mum explained that names were told verbally to the nurse so the nurse will just spell the baby's name based on whatever she heard. @.@ okayyy. Fine, if that's the case, I understand Dan, Tan, Than...they all sound similar..but Seng?! I guess that explains all the quirky names like Sum Ting Wong (something wrong), Chin Tu Fatt (chin too fat) and whatnot.

Now however, people seem to have same names. My secondary school used to have two suet leng/lings. My church has two wynn ian/win ian. Come to think of it, the older generation people have more originality in their names. Maybe the nurses can claim half the credit. :P (no offense)
By accident when I was blog hopping just now, I read a blog and the blogger's name is Kui Ling! Exactly the spelling. I got really excited because I've never known a person who possess the same name as I have all this while. The closest I know is the name of a place, one of the top tourist destination in China, Guilin, which...I have never been to :( It is said to be one of the most beautiful landscapes in Asia. I dare say, Kui Ling is also one of the most beautiful female in the world! :D

Oh wells, all I can say is, name your child well next time ;)
